The River

The Buffalo National River was the first national river to be designated in the United States March 1, 1972. Nestled in what some might consider to be “a sweet escape to nowhere” the free-flowing river provides the adventurer in you the opportunity of a lifetime to become one with nature.

Ponca Welcomes You

Located in Newton County, Arkansas; the town of Ponca has a population of about 14 based on 2020 Census results. But don’t let that scare you away, the vast beauty of the wilderness welcomes guests from around the world with open arms.

Travel Plans

Want to know the best time to plan your visit? Feel free to check river levels below. However, just as a quick bit of advice, river usage typically peaks between June & July. Floating on weekdays or a lower section of the river may help adventurers avoid crowds.

Understanding the Chart

Before deciding to take on the river, know the the risk!

River Levels (ft) What do they Mean?
1.2 or Less Too low, Don't go!
1.3 - 1.7 Some areas are floatable, but expect some dragging.
1.8 - 1.9 If you're going Low Water Canoeing, this is will work!
2.0 - 2.4Soft white waters. Beginners Beware!
3.0 - 3.6Challenging waters. Canoers will need experience to face these areas.
4.1 - 4.5Currents too strong for canoes. Rafts and other crafts may be ridden based on circumstance.
4.6 or HigherVery Challenging - Strongly do not recommend unless highly skilled.
